abnormality |
Reason |
Glaze has run off in some places |
Next time, apply less glaze. You were too generous. OR you fired too high. |
Glaze only ran off in one place |
You may have applied the glaze unevenly and too thickly in the area where it ran. Did you dip your ceramic in the glaze? Then this was probably the place where the last drop ran down. |
Silk matt glaze suddenly much too matt |
Next time, apply the glaze less sparingly. Or apply another 1-2 layers and fire it again. It's also possible that you didn't mix the glaze well enough. |
Matt glaze suddenly shiny |
The ceramic was fired too high. It might help if you place this glaze lower in the kiln next time. It is hottest at the top. |
Matt glaze feels rough and has craters |
Here you overdid it when applying the glaze. Be a little more economical next time. OR did you set a holding time that was too short at the end of the firing? Give the glaze more time! |
Glaze rough and color not as expected |
Your glaze needs to be warmer! Perhaps fire it 10 degrees higher or try positioning it right at the top of the oven. That's where it's coziest. |
Glaze developed many cracks while cooling |
Ever heard of craquelure? It's actually a glaze defect. But sometimes it can be quite beautiful. What do you think? It wasn't your intention to create this effect? Then maybe your clay and the glaze just don't get along. The thermal expansion is just too different. |
Some time after firing, the glaze flakes off at the edges |
Clay and glaze don't like each other. Their thermal expansion is too different. |
Glaze has bubbles or craters |
Difficult topic, as it is difficult to judge. Either it was too hot in the oven for your glaze!? Or... gases were rising from the clay and causing the bubbles or craters!? You could also try increasing the holding time at the end of the firing by 15 minutes. |
